Who Is To Be Blamed For the Fall Of The Mighty Statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji?

statue, Shivaji

” I bow my head and apologize” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the people of Maharashtra, to defend what can only be described as a farcical misadventure in municipal management. The 35-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort, which had been inaugurated in December 2023, recently collapsed, exposing not just the shoddy craftsmanship but a shocking level of incompetence and corruption.

The Maharashtra Directorate of Art, tasked with the initial approval of the statue, sanctioned a modest 6-foot clay model. Imagine their surprise when a towering 35-foot colossus materialized, presumably built by someone who mistook “modest” for “monumental.” The statue’s unintended grandeur might have been awe-inspiring if it weren’t for the fact that it toppled less than a year after its grand unveiling. Instead of being a symbol of Maratha valor, it has become a crumbling testament to bureaucratic and engineering failures.

The Navy, which was responsible for overseeing the installation, appears to have flunked the basic requirement of informing the Directorate of significant design changes. One can only speculate whether the Navy’s omission was a tactical ploy to create a ghostly spectacle of their own making. Their disregard for proper approvals and structural integrity has led to a collapse that is as monumental as the statue itself—only in the most tragic sense.

To make matters worse, the political circus that followed was as chaotic as the statue’s construction. The Maharashtra government has been reduced to a blame-shifting pantomime, with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis scrambling to avoid accountability. Shinde’s offer to “apologize 100 times” is more a display of political melodrama than genuine remorse. His claim that the statue’s fall was due to a “high-speed wind” in a coastal region is a feeble attempt to mask the real issue: sheer negligence.

The opposition, sensing an opportunity, has hurled accusations of corruption and mismanagement. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance has seized this moment to demand the resignation of top officials, positioning the collapse as a symptom of a broader systemic rot. Their calls for protests and political rallies have added fuel to the already blazing inferno of scandal.

The Indian Navy’s subsequent investigation and the formation of a technical committee to probe the collapse are too little, too late. The Navy’s attempt to absolve itself of blame while simultaneously dealing with a failed project is reminiscent of a fire brigade arriving at a blaze only to find that they’ve brought the wrong equipment. The structural consultant’s apprehension and the artist’s dubious credentials only add layers to this comedic tragedy.

The scandal has also spotlighted the government’s audacious plan to build a new 100-foot statue. This is not just an absurdity but a testament to their inability to address the root problems. It’s as if they’re suggesting that their way out of this mess is to magnify their failures by scaling up their grandiosity. The suggestion of a “bigger and better” statue reeks of a misguided attempt to fix a broken system with an even more extravagant display.

In the face of this fiasco, Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar’s apology seems like the only reasonable response, though it remains to be seen if it translates into meaningful action. The tragic irony is that a statue meant to honor a great leader has become a symbol of everything that is wrong with the current state of governance and project management in Maharashtra.

As the political brawl continues, one can only hope that this farce serves as a cautionary tale. The collapse of the Shivaji statue is not merely a structural failure but a reflection of a deeper, systemic issue. It underscores the need for transparency, accountability, and competence in public projects. Until then, the people of Maharashtra can only watch in dismay as their historical hero’s legacy is marred by an epic mismanagement saga that is anything but honorable.
