One the first death anniversary of Puneeth ‘Appu’ Rajkumar, his last film, in the form of a docudrama released on 28 October 2022. ‘Gandhada Gudi’ is directed by Amoghavarsha, who was unanimously praised for his previous venture, ‘Wild Karnataka’.

The movie, with all its acclaim, is a testament to the rise of the Kannada film industry. An industry that had earlier gained a name for making high on content movies. However, for the longest period, the content coming out of the state of Karnataka was overshadowed by overly commercial Telugu movies and cinematically brilliant Malayalam movies. All this while, the Kannada film industry was, in a way, sandwiched between these extremes.
The humongous success of the KGF franchise recently and the worldwide success of the hyper-local ‘Kanatara’ has seen this tectonic shift.

Rishab Shetty On ‘Gandhada Gudi’
Rishab Shetty, who has been in the news for the success of his latest ‘Kantara’, watched ‘Gandhada Gudi’ and showered praise on all those involved in the project. Speaking of the late Superstar Puneeth Rajkumar, Rishab Shetty stated that he brought a certain kind of human spirit into the movie.
“What I feel right now can’t be expressed in words. Everyone can become heroes on screen but to become one in real life, to be universally loved and accepted, I feel this film presents Appu sir’s message to the world beautifully. And I feel he was able to experience everything that he wanted to in life and the film shows exactly that. In a way, he has also told us that one must learn new things in the journey of life” said Rishab Shetty.
I would urge every Kannadiga, regardless of where they live, to go and watch Gandhada Gudi and if you want to learn about the man’s journey, you must watch the film.” he continued.

Appu In Kantara?
In one of his recent interviews, the film’s producer talked about the possibility of having Puneeth Rajkumar play the lead in Kantara at one point. The association, which could have been a ‘dream come true for the fans, could not materialise due to scheduling.
“Information that no one knows. Appu sir was supposed to play the lead role in the movie ‘Kantara’. We were supposed to shoot the movie in a certain season. But due to the date issue, Rishab’s name was suggested by Puneeth for the lead role’ said Karthik Gowda, executive producer of Kantara.
