The collapse of a 50-year-old nursery school in Shivajinagar served as a wake-up call, leading to a comprehensive survey by BBMP’s Quality Assurance Cell. The findings exposed distressing conditions in 19 schools and colleges across Bengaluru, with issues ranging from structural weaknesses to a lack of maintenance, and even schools lacking essential water supply for basic hygiene.
The survey, developed in collaboration with school headmasters, identifies the 19 institutions as “unstable,” posing a risk to the safety of students and staff. The report strongly recommends the demolition of these dilapidated structures at the earliest possible opportunity to avert potential hazards.
BBMP provides nursery, high school, pre-university, and degree education through 163 facilities, some of which are rented. However, the majority of these facilities, primarily located in the Central Business District (CBD), raise concerns about the lack of efforts to provide affordable education in the peripheral areas added to the corporation in 2008.
Beyond the 19 identified unstable institutions, the report highlights 67 schools in need of repairs and maintenance, facing challenges such as overcrowding due to insufficient classroom capacities. School heads are urging the provision of additional buildings to accommodate growing student populations.
Specific instances of neglected schools include an incomplete building housing a BBMP nursery school in Doddakannelli, lacking basic amenities like windows, water supply, and electricity connections. Additionally, a nursery school in Ulsoor operates from a temporary shelter, showcasing widespread problems with unkempt toilets due to water supply shortages.
