Mishra does not come from a film background. When the actor made it to Mumbai, he was completely on his own, without a stable source of income. From 1991 to 1999, the actor tried his hand at different aspects of filmmaking, such as art direction, camerawork, and lighting.

Although a struggler in his initial days, Sanjay Mishra always had a keen eye for perfection. While shooting for a TV series named Chanakya, the actor could not get a scene right, as a result of which the director had to take 28 takes. While talking about this incident Mishra stated that it has been his habit to get under the skin of the character.

Sanjay Mishra made his debut in 1995 with Shah Rukh Khan starrer, Oh Darling Yeh Hai India! However, he became a household name in 1999 during the ICC Cricket World Cup.
