The University Grants Commission (UGC) declared 20 universities on Wednesday to be “fake” and unable to award any degrees, with Delhi having the largest number with eight of these establishments.

“It has come to the notice of the UGC that several institutions are offering degrees contrary to the provisions of the UGC Act. Degrees awarded by such universities shall neither be recognised nor valid for higher education or employment purpose. These universities are not empowered to confer any degree,” UGC secretary Manish Joshi said.
He said these universities are “fake” while releasing a list of these institutions.
Here is the list of universities that have been declared fake:
1) Delhi:
- All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences;
- Commercial University Ltd, Daryaganj;
- United Nations University;
- Vocational University;
- ADR-Centric Juridical University;
- Indian Institution of Science and Engineering;
- Viswakarma Open University for Self-Employment;
- Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University), according to the UGC.
2) Uttar Pradesh:
- Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith;
3) National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy;
- Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open university);
- Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad.
4) Andhra Pradesh:
- Christ New Testament Deemed University
- Bible Open University of India
5) West Bengal:
- Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine
- Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research
6) Karnataka:
- Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society
7) Kerala:
- St John’s University
8) Maharashtra:
- Raja Arabic University
9) Puducherry:
- Sree Bodhi Academy of Higher Education
