Traffic police have identified as many as 427 unscientific speed bumps in different parts of the city and asked BBMP to replace them with proper ones. Two-wheeler users may be spared of back-breaking rides and motorists negotiating obstacles on city roads.
They have also raised the issue of obstacles like debris, potholes and bad road patches hindering traffic movement with civic agencies, including BWSSB, and asked for all obstacles to be cleared. “We have received details of the places where unscientific humps have been installed. The same are being removed and replaced by two to three sets of rumble strips. Work has already started in a few places,” said BS Prahlad, chief engineer (major roads), BBMP.
Special commissioner of police (traffic) MA Saleem told Times Of India that unscientific speed bumps not only pose threat to riders/drivers, but also slow down traffic. They include potholes, petty shops on pavements, garbage dumped on roads, BWSSB pipes dumped on roads and pavements, construction materials discarded on roads and improper asphalting,” he said.
According to data from the traffic police department, 55 spots have been identified across the city where garbage has been dumped on the roads, 84 spots where construction materials have been left on carriageways, 36 places where BWSSB has left behind its material and 186 places where petty shops stand on pavements. Proper lighting will help ease movement of vehicles and bring down chances of road accidents occurring due to poor lighting.
