Trinamool Congress MP, Mahua Moitra filed a defamation suit in the Delhi high court on Tuesday against Bharatiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey, Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, and several media organizations after the BJP MP made allegations against her stating that she was bribed by Darshan Hiranandani to ask questions in the Parliament about the Adani group. The plea is listed before the bench of Justice Sachin Datta today. The court said it would hear the matter on Friday.
In a two-page letter written to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, the BJP MP stated “Bribes were exchanged between Mahua Moitra and a businessman to ask questions in Parliament in exchange for cash and gifts” and demanded that an inquiry committee be formed against the Trinamool Congress MP. He also sought Mahua Moitra’s immediate suspension from the House. He stated that 50 of 61 questions she asked in Lok Sabha till recently were focused on the Adani Group, a business group which the TMC MP has often accused of malpractices. The BJP leader said that through a “quid pro quo,” it has been discovered that Mahua Moitra was “raising money from a businessman in lieu of asking questions in Lok Sabha, targeting another business group”. He said that the title of ‘firebrand Member of Parliament’ given to Mahua Moita was “nothing but a sham”. The Lok Sabha speaker referred Dubey’s complaint against the MP to the ethics committee of the Lower House chaired by BJP member Vinod Kumar Sonkar.
Previously, Mahua Moitra, stated that she welcomed any motions against me right after the Speaker finished dealing with those. “Waiting for ED and others to file an FIR in the Adani coal scam before coming to my doorstep.” The Hiranandani Group has denied the allegations made by the BJP MP and said, “We have always been in the business of business and not in the business of politics. Our group has always worked with the government in the interest of the nation and will continue doing so.”
In a statement issued by the Adani Group on Monday observed that “some groups and individuals have been working overtime to harm our name, goodwill, and market standing”. An Adani Group spokesperson also shed light on a complaint filed by Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), submitting a sworn affidavit that outlined what he described as “the commission of an elaborate criminal conspiracy”. Mahua and Jai Anant Dehadrai, her estranged partner and Supreme Court lawyer are reportedly in the midst of a bitter feud over the custody of their pet dog. The TMC lawmaker had filed multiple police complaints against Dehadrai in the last six months for alleged criminal trespass, theft, vulgar messages, and abuse.
On Monday, Mahua Moitra tagged the Adani Group’s statement and tweeted, “Mr A – this lame statement your best efforts? Falling back on Fake Degree MP & a jilted ex’s lies? I won’t rest till @dir_ed , @CBItweets investigate & freeze ₹13000 cr coal scam you have stolen from Indians. I’m told even Hon’ble @narendramodi is sick of you & your frauds.”
