A popular writer-filmmaker from Hindi film Industry, Pradeep Sarkar passed away at the age of 67, on March 24. Sarkar was known for making films like Parineeta and Mardaani. The director is known for working on several high-concept, women-leading movies in mainstream Hindi cinema. He had also worked with Kajol, in a movie named Helicopter Eela.

Sarcar’s Journey
Recipient of several awards, Sarcar started his journey at Delhi College of Art, from where he graduated with a gold medal. Before making films on his own, Sarcar worked as a Creative Director, where he worked in the area of mainstream advertising for over 17 years.

Pradeep Sarkar was better known for making acclaimed and highly successful commercials, at the beginning of his career. Some of the brands which he has worked with include Tata Yellow Pages, ICICI Prudential, Aaj Tak TV commercials, and Onida KY thunder.
Sarkar made one of his first shifts in the direction of cinema when he started making music videos. He collaborated and made videos for famous musicians, including Bhupen Hazarika. He is known for his work in music videos, which includes Shubha Mudgal’s ‘Ab Ke Saawan’, Euphoria’s ‘Dhoom Pichak Dhoom’ and ‘Maaeri’, Sultan Khan’s “Piya Basanti” and Bhupen Hazarika’s ‘Ganga’.

Shift to movies
After making over 1000 commercials and several visually appealing music videos, Sarkar made his entry into films with a National Award-winning film, Pareenita. He won a National Award in the Best Debut Film of a Director category.

Pradeep later started working with Yash Raj Films, for whom he directed the likes of Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Lafangey Parindey, and Mardaani all of which have been produced by Yash Raj Films. His latest, Eela, starring Kajol, was produced by Ajay Devgn Films and was released in October 2018.
