The Upcoming Lok Sabha Election will see the struggle by the third-generation leaders of Hassan. Hassan’s Lok Sabha Constituency is known as a political powerhouse. The Hassan Lok Sabha constituency has garnered nationwide attention due to the enduring political legacy of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda.
Full Story:
Known for its entrenched political dynamics, Hassan has been a focal point for the rivalry between Deve Gowda of the Janata Parivar and the late Puttaswamy Gowda from the Congress. This constituency has earned a reputation as a political stronghold, having produced a Prime Minister for the nation and being instrumental in bolstering farmer and Dalit movements. Additionally, Hassan’s significance extends to tourism.
The upcoming electoral battle in Hassan marks a generational shift, with the third generation of traditional rivals entering the fray. Deve Gowda’s grandson, Prajwal Revanna, is seeking re-election, while his opponent, Shreyas Patel, grandson of former MP G. Puttaswamy Gowda, represents the continuation of a longstanding rivalry.
Historically, the Congress has dominated this constituency, although the Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) has maintained a stronghold for nearly two decades, with Deve Gowda being consistently elected until 2014. Prajwal Revanna succeeded his grandfather in 2019, facing stiff competition from BJP’s A. Manju.
This election sees a direct contest between Congress and JDS due to an alliance between BJP and JDS at the state level. Despite JDS’s apparent grip on the constituency, the Congress has made significant inroads, particularly through welfare schemes and outreach to minority communities.
Shreyas Patel’s close margin of defeat in the last assembly election against HD Revanna has added intrigue to the contest, with Congress nominating him. Prajwal Revanna enjoys support from his father, HD Revanna, and uncle, HD Kumaraswamy, further bolstering his campaign.
However, internal dissension within the BJP and concerns over issues like the plight of coconut farmers and potato diseases pose challenges to the JDS-BJP alliance. The alliance risks alienating minority and Dalit voters from the JDS, potentially benefiting the Congress.
Moreover, the inability of Puttaswamy Gowda’s family to consolidate political power after his demise could translate into sympathy votes for Shreyas Patel, a narrative effectively employed by Congress.
The electoral outcome in Hassan hinges on crucial factors such as the support of the Vokkaliga community, minority and Dalit votes, and the Kuruba community’s allegiance, ensuring a closely contested battle between Congress and JDS, with victory margins likely to be slim.
