Amid the implementation of the Shakthi Scheme, Transport Minister- Ramalinga Reddy, has made a formal request to the government for approval of hiring an additional 8944 employees. The proposed recruitment drive aims to fill positions for drivers, conductors, and technicians across all four road transport corporations. Furthermore, the minister has also sought permission to introduce 4000 new buses as part of the scheme’s expansion efforts.

Before the scheme, the average daily passenger count was recorded at over 84 lakhs. However, since the scheme’s initiation, this figure has remarkably increased by over 20 lakhs, reaching an average of one crore passengers traveling daily. This notable rise in passenger numbers highlights the success of the Shakti Scheme in accommodating a larger volume of individuals relying on RTCs for their transportation needs.
BMTC has formally requested approval from the government to recruit 2000 conductors and 1000 driver-cum-conductors. Currently, they have issued work orders for 840 diesel buses and 921 electrical buses. Furthermore, the BMTC has plans to call for tenders to acquire 121 electrical mini-buses shortly. As the maintenance of electrical buses follows the Gross Cost Contracting (GCC) model, ensuring efficient upkeep and operation of these vehicles.
In the case of the KSRTC, the corporation has now applied for permission to recruit an additional 1433 driving staff and 2738 technical staff. This initiative aims to strengthen the workforce and ensure efficient operations within the corporation. Furthermore, KSRTC has also sought consent to establish ten petrol bunk outlets in collaboration with Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, who have been selected through a tender process. KSRTC plans to select 36 more petrol bunks through a new tender process, utilizing the available land owned by the corporation.
Meanwhile, NWKRTC has requested permission to invite tenders for the procurement of 450 electric buses under the GCC basis, along with the acquisition of 20 non-AC sleeper buses and 4 AC sleeper buses. Additionally, KKRTC has proposed the recruitment of 1773 conductors to strengthen their workforce.
At present the cumulative expenditure of all the Road Transport Corporations (RTCs) participating in the Shakti scheme has exceeded Rs 200 crore within a mere 18 days. As of June 29th, the corporations have reported a remarkable ticket value of Rs 234 crore from women passengers alone. The scheme has benefited a staggering 9.9 crore women passengers.
