The incident that unfolded on Independence Day at Manchi Government School in Dakshina Kannada’s Bantwal Taluk has surfaced all over the net. As seen in a widely circulated video, students were organized on the school grounds and reportedly led to recite slogans like ‘Sarojini Naidu Ki Jai, Bipin Chandrapal Ki Jai,’ alongside ‘Veer Savarkar Ki Jai.’
Following this, the school’s headmistress, Smt Vimala, extended a warm welcome to both the attending children and dignitaries. The video was later shared across social media platforms, quickly gaining viral traction and subsequently prompting strong reactions from parents belonging to a specific community, who voiced their discontent with the school’s administration.
The video captures a tense exchange between parents and the school administration, wherein the parents express their unease, stating that, “It was you, the school administration, which prompted our children to chant slogans, not us. We didn’t initiate the viral video either, so why were such slogans raised? Instances like this should not occur in the future.” Following an outcry from the parents, school administration had to convene a meeting with the parents and the school headmistress had to apologize to the parents.
Expressing her regret, Mrs. Vimala conveyed, “Please don’t create chaos, there are police waiting downstairs. Chanting Veer Savarkar ki Jai was wrong and I apologized too but who uploaded the video on social media? There are so many parents here but tell me who has done it.”
Furthermore, the school’s headmistress has formally lodged a complaint with the Vittal Police Station, citing unidentified individuals who purportedly shared and propagated the video on social media platforms.
The saffron party has not taken kindly to this incident and have raised their voice against both the parents and headmistress. The BJP has alleged that it is yet again a political agenda floated by the government to appease voters. The issue is being met with silence from both the district administration and the government.
BC Nagesh Former primary and secondary education minister speaking to some sources said that “this is atrocious as to how people are protesting against chanting of Veer Savarkar by school children. Savarkar was a legendary freedom fighter who put the nation’s interests above himself. The parents have wronged their own children and the school’s headmistress apologizing to the parents was unnecessary. The government should stop spreading politics of hate and should teach students the right history.”
