Savarkar is one of the most controversial freedom fighters. He is revered by the Indian right-wing community and is questioned and criticized by the left-wing community of the country. The opposition Congress has been questioning the ruling BJP over the promotion of Veer Savarkar. Amidst the questioning, the BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday launched the Veer Savarkar Rath Yatra to spread awareness among the public about his contribution and sacrifices.
Yediyurappa, who was nominated to the party’s highest decision-making bodies for the first time after visiting the historical town of Mysuru, launched the Yatra from Kote Anjaneya Temple on the premises of the Mysuru Palace. The event was organized by the Savarkar Foundation.
While speaking to the audience he said, “If he continues to issue statements like this, the people of the state will teach him a lesson. We will propagate (among people) the patriotism of Veer Savarkar. It is going to be a quiet one… we will not gather huge groups.”
The Rath Yatra will pass in Mysuru, Mandya, and Chamarajanagar districts till August 30. The values and principles of Veer Savarkar will be spread during the Rath Yatra. According to Rajath, convenor of the foundation, the opposition party, and a section of society have created confusion about his role in the freedom movement and fight against the British.
While Savarkar did contribute to the freedom movement, he was controversial for his thoughts on Hindutva ideology and his opinions on Christians and Muslims. He considered Christians and Muslims as second-class citizens who should have limited political rights. A Rath Yatra for a controversial figure could incite people from the other communities. Moreover, when there are other issues which require greater importance that is being ignored by the ruling BJP, a Rath Yatra is not required in Karnataka.
