Indian Tennis Superstar Sania Mirza announced that she will be retiring from the sport. The 2022 WTA tour will be her final cycle. The 35-year old suffered a loss in a first round game at the Australian Open in Women’s doubles. Mirza announced this in the post match interview on 19th January, 2022. The announcement was made in the post match interview on 19th of January, 2022.
“There’s a few reasons for it. It’s not as simple as ‘okay I’m not going to play’. I do feel my recovery is taking longer. I’m putting my 3-year-old son at risk by traveling so much with him, that’s something I have to take into account. I think my body is wearing down. My knee was really hurting today today and I am not saying that’s the reason we lost but I do think that it is taking time to recover as I am getting older”
Wishes have poured in from all across as she announced her plans to discontinue playing the sport.
Actors Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Anil Kapoor posted on social media, wishing her luck.
Sania Mirza is the first Indian to find a spot in the top 30 in the WTA singles rankings. Besides, she has also won six Grand Slams.
In the same post-match conference, Mirza talked about wanting to enjoy the rest of the season to the fullest, in order to set an example for mothers.
“Beyond this season, I don’t feel my body doing it. It’s beat”
