A former cricketer turned conman, Mrinank Singh, has been apprehended by the Delhi Police for orchestrating a series of scams involving prominent individuals and luxury establishments.
Full Story:
A Commerce graduate from Delhi University’s Hindu College, Mrinank Singh furthered his education with an MBA in Human Resources from OPJS University in Rajasthan, according to police records. Singh asserted his participation in the 2021 Ranji Trophy and IPL seasons from 2014 to 2018 with the Mumbai Indians. However, the police are diligently verifying the accuracy of these claims as part of their ongoing investigation.
The police disclosed that Mrinank Singh deceived Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant of Rs 1.6 crore in 2021. Singh, formerly associated with the Haryana Under-19 team, exploited his connection with Pant from their time in a zonal cricket academy. The conman, under the guise of securing discounted luxury watches, convinced Pant to part with valuable jewelry and other high-end items. In return, Singh issued a cheque worth Rs 1.6 crore, which subsequently bounced due to insufficient funds. Notably, Pant did not file a formal complaint.
Mrinank Singh’s fraudulent activities extended to luxury hotels, where he posed as a seasoned cricketer affiliated with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Last year, Singh stayed at the Taj Palace Hotel in Delhi for nearly a week, accumulating a bill of Rs 5.6 lakh. He assured the hotel staff that his sponsor, Adidas, would cover the expenses. However, investigations revealed that Singh provided false bank account details. A case of cheating was registered based on the hotel’s complaint, shedding light on Singh’s intricate web of deception.
Singh’s audacity knew no bounds as he impersonated Karnataka Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Alok Kumar and occasionally presented himself as a brand ambassador for international brands. His attempt to influence immigration officials by claiming to be the son of ADGP Alok Kumar failed, leading to his detention at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The police highlighted Singh’s extensive list of victims, ranging from hotels and bars to young girls and cab drivers. His misleading tactics included phone calls to senior police officers.
Mrinank Singh’s arrest at the airport came after a trail of deceit and manipulation. During interrogation, he attempted to mislead the police by falsely claiming that his father, Ashok Kumar Singh, was a former Indian cricket team player from the 1980s and 1990s, currently working with Air India. Singh’s history with law enforcement includes a previous arrest for cheating a businessman of Rs 5.75 lakh in Jalandhar earlier in the year. Despite securing bail, Singh continued his fraudulent activities.
