Controversial YouTuber and Right Wing Influencer Ajeet Bharti has found himself at the center of a legal and jurisdictional tussle as Karnataka Police attempted to serve him a notice at his residence in Noida. The police action was in response to a video posted by Bharti, which allegedly contained contentious remarks about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The incident led to a confrontation between Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh police outside Bharti’s residence, sparking a heated debate on social media.
The Karnataka Police issued a notice to Ajeet Bharti based on a video titled ‘Rahul trying Hard To Fuel Fire, Naseer Wants Modi in Skull Cap,’ which was deemed to be aimed at creating enmity and ill-will between communities. The notice required Bharti to join the probe within seven days of receiving it. The video, an opinionated piece that took snippets from Naseeruddin Shah’s interview with Karan Thapar, is filled with jibes and propagandist remarks on the former’s religion, the Congress party, and Rahul Gandhi.
The case against Bharti was registered following a complaint by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. The complaint alleged that Bharti had falsely claimed in the video that Rahul Gandhi intended to bring back the Babri Masjid in place of the Ram Mandir, an assertion vehemently denied by the complainant.
A video showing Karnataka Police officials outside Bharti’s residence went viral on social media, triggering a wave of reactions from prominent figures, including politicians, journalists, and commentators. The incident also led to a face-off between Karnataka and UP police outside Bharti’s house. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla defended Ajeet Bharti, stating that Bharti was paraphrasing Acharya Pramod Krishnan, a former Congress member, and emphasized that such attempts to intimidate individuals would not be tolerated.
AltNews co-founder Mohammed Zubair shared instances of alleged disinformation spread by Bharti who used a snippet from Rahul Gandhi’s address at Hyderabad, regarding the party manifesto ‘Nyaya Patra’, and tweeted about it accusing Rahul Gandhi and the Congress of “annexing the rights of Hindus”. However, the latter had not made any such claim.
Bharti is one amongst many such influencers, who call themselves “independent journalists” but only act as channels of disseminating disinformation and creating social discord among communities.
