The Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday unanimously passed a resolution for making Rahul Gandhi the party’s national president, according to the statement of a state cabinet minister.
A meeting of Pradesh Congress Committees was being held in each state wherein a resolution was passed stating that “we authorize the incoming Congress president to appoint PCC and AICC members.” However, apart from this, another resolution, which was proposed by Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, was also passed stating that Rahul Gandhi be made Congress Chief.
The party’s state in-charge Ajay Maken, organization election officer (PRO) Rajendra Kumpawat, state president Govind Singh Dotasra and party members from different districts of the state attended the meeting held at the party’s state headquarters on Saturday. The resolution has been passed that everyone will abide by whatever the national president decides on, including the appointment of state presidents. Another resolution moved by CM Ashok Gehlot to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the party president has also been passed.
In July 2019, Rahul Gandhi had resigned as the Congress chief following the party’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections. The Congress had won only 52 of 543 parliamentary seats in the polls.
On August 22, reports claimed that Rahul Gandhi has refused to contest the election for the Congress president’s post. Incumbent Congress President Sonia Gandhi also reportedly expressed her desire not to continue in the post citing health reasons.
Rahul Gandhi has so far held the card close to his chest as far as the Congress President poll is concerned. The only hint Gandhi scion dropped was in Kanyakumari, while addressing the media, he had said that if he does not file the nomination, then he should be asked why he was against taking the leadership and he would answer. The nomination for Congress’ President election starts from September 24 and by October 2 – if there is a single candidate then – Congress will get its next President.
Following this, in each state PCC delegates are holding meetings and passing the resolution that will authorize the incoming President to appoint PCC chiefs and AICC delegates. However, state units on their own are also passing resolutions that Rahul Gandhi handed over the baton to lead Congress as its next chief.
CM Ashok Gehlot, along with other Congress leaders such as Rajya Sabha MP Mallikarjun Kharge and Salman Kurshid have also previously urged Rahul Gandhi to reconsider his decision and become the party chief again.
