On September 30, a Twitter war broke out between Tamilians and Telugu-ites after a bunch of them compared Baahubali with Ponniyin Selvan.
Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 was released in the theatres on September 30 amid huge buzz. A section of people compared Ponniyin Selvan to SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali starring Prabhas and Rana Daggubati. This angered a lot of Tamilians, who waged war against people who compared PS 1 to Baahubali on Twitter.
Many attempted to reason it by saying that Baahubali was a fantasy film, while Ponniyin Selvan was historical fiction. Such comparisons occurred when director Mani Ratnam stated back then that the success of Baahubali movies is a major boost for anyone, who wishes to take big budget period dramas. This was wrongly interpreted by a section as Mani Ratnam stating that the Ponniyin Selvan movies are inspired by the Baahubali movies just because the director used the word ‘inspiration’ for putting forward his point.
It has now become a full-blown war on Twitter between Tamilians and Telugu-ites.
One twitter user said, “Rather than giving a compelling product which appeals to every section of audience, tamil people are more eager to prove themselves better than TFI. It’s a tough fact to accept but it is what it is.”
Another said, ” Why are jealous #Tollywood fans spreading unwanted hate towards Ponniyin Selvan without seeing it? Don’t forget tamil people celebrated and had outpouring love for #Baahubali when it released. We were the one who cherished the film and supported!”
“Might be harsh but nowhere near to visuals and VFX of Bahubali,” wrote one Twitter user.
SS Rajamouli’s Bahubali series is a drama based on the power struggle in the fictional world of Mahishmasti. The film starred Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Ramya Krishnan, Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah and Sathyaraj.
Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan is based on the Tamil literary novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The film is based on the true events that transpired in the Chola kingdom between 900 to 950 AD. The film features Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Jayam Ravi and Karthi in lead roles.
