In a significant decision, President Droupadi Murmu has given her official approval to the renaming of the renowned Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) located in Delhi.
Henceforth, it will bear the distinguished title of the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society, as formally announced by the government in a gazette notification. This transformative change reflects a pivotal shift in the museum’s focus and signifies a new era in preserving and celebrating the legacy of India’s Prime Ministers.
In the middle of June, there was a special meeting of the NMML Society. They decided to change the institution’s name to “Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society.” The meeting was led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is the vice president of the Society. This big decision shows that they want to do something new with the institution and honor the Prime Ministers of India.
According to sources, certain administrative procedures were required to officially establish the institution’s new name. This formation of the name change coincided with India’s 77th Independence Day, marking a significant moment in the institution’s history. The announcement regarding this milestone was shared by the vice-chairman of the Executive Council of the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library on Twitter.
“Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) is now Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML) Society w.e.f August 14, 2023- in tune with the democratization and diversification of the remit of the society,” the post read.
The choice to rename the library, situated within Teen Murti House, which was the official residence of India’s inaugural Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, sparked strong reactions, particularly from the Congress party. They characterized it as a deliberate action aimed at erasing Nehru’s enduring legacy.
