Mount Carmel College (MCC), one of Bengaluru’s oldest educational institutions, has taken a significant step by allowing male students to apply for all its courses for the academic year 2024-2025.
Full Story:
Previously, in 2016, the college had extended this privilege only for Postgraduate courses. The decision, endorsed by the BU Academic Council, marks a pivotal moment in the college’s 75-year history, as it moves towards attaining university status. Dr. George Lekha, Mount Carmel College’s Principal, sees this as a progressive move in alignment with the institution’s evolution.
Dr. Lekha revealed that alongside this pivotal shift, the college has undergone modifications in its academic programs, aligning itself with the goal of becoming a full-fledged university. The decision to open all courses to male students is seen as a strategic move to ensure that Mount Carmel does not evolve into an exclusively women’s university.
Addressing concerns about potential changes to the college’s atmosphere, Dr. Lekha assured that the alterations would be gradual, and the administration is keen on observing the response from prospective students. She clarified that there are no immediate plans to increase the student intake significantly.
Dr. Lekha also discussed the prospect of a shared campus for the Pre-University (PU) College, stating that accommodating male students would not pose a problem, considering the limited increase in student intake for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses. While acknowledging the possibility of reserving a small percentage of seats for male students in the future, she clarified that such considerations are yet to be discussed.
Currently, Mount Carmel College has taken a noteworthy step towards inclusivity, with 13 male students enrolled in various PG courses. The college administration seems optimistic about this progressive shift, and the decision reflects the institution’s commitment to adapting to changing educational dynamics.
