Akshata Murthy, is Britain’s new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s wife, who has been trending on social media since Sunak’s appointment as the new British PM. His wife Akshata Murthy is the daughter of Indian billionaire Narayana Murthy, one of the country’s best known businessmen who has been dubbed the Bill Gates of India.
Born in Hubli in Karnataka, the daughter of N R Narayana Murthy, considered ‘father of the Indian IT sector’ and Sudha Murthy, an acclaimed philanthropist and writer.
Akshata Narayana Murthy was born in 1980 to a young ambitious computer engineer and a computer scientist who were finding their foot in the yet-to-evolve software market of the country.
Akshata Murthy attended high school in Bangalore and studied at Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Los Angeles. She also has a Masters degree in business administration from Stanford University.
Akshata met Rishi while studying at Stanford University in America – Rishi had won a Fulbright scholarship – with Tatler describing her as ‘an artistic and fashion-loving student with a deep passion for India’s traditional craftsmanship.’
Infosys was started by her father in 1981, a year after her birth. “In those days we could not afford a telephone at home, and my then colleague, Arvind Kher, came all the way from our office in Nariman Point (in Mumbai) to our house in Bandra (a Mumbai suburb) to tell me that your mother had delivered you,” N. R. Narayana Murthy wrote in “Legacy”.
The 42-year-old began her career in finance in California before starting her own fashion label, Akshata Designs, which launched its first collection in 2011. Murty had previously started her own design label called Akshata Designs, which closed down in 2012. The next year, she became director of the family-owned venture capital firm called Catamaran Ventures, which invested in British luxury furniture The New Craftsmen and Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technology Corporation.
She is also director at London-based Digme Fitness which is currently valued at £ 7.2 million. Akshata also holds shares in her family business Infosys, and on her LinkedIn is listed as director of the business she and Rishi set up together Catamaran Ventures, the gym chain Digme Fitness and the Etonian tailor New & Lingwood. She’s also been linked to Jamie Oliver’s Pizzeria.2
