For the longest time, Indian politics has been seen as a ‘Man’s playing field’. The number of women politicians and leaders that we have had in the last 75 years of independence is surprisingly low. Amongst those active, many have served in rubber stamp positions.
However, amongst the current league of politicians, several such women leaders are not talked about much in the national forum. Let us have a look at a few of them
Vasundhara Raje
A member of the royal family, Raje became the first woman Chief Minister of one of the country’s biggest states, Rajasthan. A member of the BJP Party, Raje was introduced to electoral politics by her mother Vijaraje Scindia. Although the first female politician to hold a constitutional position as important as the chief of a state, Raje is not the first prominent politician from her family. She is the sister of popular Congress leader Madhavrao Scindia and aunt to his son Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Supriya Sule
Sule is regarded as one of the most well-spoken parliamentarians in the country today. A member of the Nationalist Congress Party, Supriya Sule has been in active politics for over a decade and a half. Sule has been named the best performer among parliamentarians on several occasions.
A part of the political family, Sule represents the Pawar stronghold Baramati in the lower house of the Indian parliament.
Kanimozhi
A politician, poet, and journalist, Kanimozhi are one of the most prominent women leaders from Southern India. Currently a Member of Parliament, Kanimozhi represented the Thoothukudi constituency in the Lok Sabha.
Kanimozhi has been at the forefront of several social and cultural causes from the state. A believer of the idea of PAN Tamil welfare, Kanimozhi has spearheaded several causes for differently abled, transgenders, and unemployed sections of society.
Maneka Gandhi
Gandhi is a member of Parliament from Lok Sabha. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Maneka Gandhi is the widow of former Indian politician Sanjay Gandhi. Maneka Gandhi is known for her staunch anti-Gandhi stand, her stints as a minister in the Narendra Modi Government, and her work toward social entrepreneurship.
Besides politics, Gandhi has authored several books on etymology, animal welfare, and law.
