A ban has been imposed on Hookah bars by the West Bengal government in Kolkata. Firhad Hakim, the city’s mayor announced this decision on Friday, December 2, 2022. The increasing adverse effects of hookah on public health were cited as a reason for the same.
The Mayor stated that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation will cancel all the required licences from bars and restaurants in the city. According to the mayor the city administration had received complaints regarding the usage of certain “intoxicants” in the hookahs to get the youth addicted to them. “We have decided to request the shutdown of hookah bars. It will remain shut across restaurants,” said Hakim.

“Chemicals used in such Hookahs are extremely bad for health. So we have decided to shut them.” stated the Mayor while addressing the media.

The Mayor stated that official warnings have been issued to restaurants to discontinue the services. He asserted that besides cancelling the older ones, no new licences would be provided.
