On a Sunday evening, tensions escalated in Ragi Gudda, Shivamogga, as a group of miscreants reportedly pelted stones at houses and vehicles. The incident, fueled by rumors of stone-pelting during an Eid Milad procession, led to chaos in the area. In response, the Shivamogga Police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd, and as a precautionary measure, Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) was enforced in Ragi Gudda.
According to some sources, a total of five individuals sustained minor injuries during the stone-pelting incident. Shivamogga SP Mithun Kumar commented on the situation, stating, “There was a stone pelting incident in Ragigudda last evening. However, we managed to disperse the crowd, and the situation is under control now. Around four to five people sustained minor injuries. Section 144 is in force in Ragi Gudda to prevent any untoward incident.”
One crucial aspect that authorities emphasized in the wake of this incident is the need to curb the spread of unverified information on social media platforms. Local police have urged residents to refrain from circulating rumors and have sternly warned that strict action will be taken against those found disseminating unverified information on any messaging platform.
The incident also had repercussions on the Eid Milad procession itself. As stones were pelted during the procession, devotees scattered in different directions, resulting in minor injuries. It underscores the importance of maintaining peace and harmony during religious processions and events, where emotions can run high. Authorities are now working towards ensuring that such incidents do not occur in the future and that religious and cultural events can be celebrated without fear or disturbance.
Section 144, which has been imposed in Ragi Gudda, prohibits the assembly of four or more people in the area and is aimed at preventing any further clashes. While it is an essential measure to maintain law and order, it is also a reminder of the need for communities to coexist peacefully, respecting each other’s religious and cultural sentiments.
