Jug Jugg Jeeyo Review: The Multistarrer Film Tries its Best, but Fails to Shine Yet

Director: Raj Mehta

Rating: 3 stars (out of 5)

Jug Jugg Jeeyo is a delightful rom-com movie released on Friday. The film got a decent start on the first day of its release, earning almost half of Bhul Bhulaiya 2’s collection. Delhi NCR topped in contributing to the former’s tally.

In Jug Jugg Jeeyo, a lot of punches and jokes are thrown in to keep the pace going. When you have a huge ensemble cast at hand, the director’s challenge is to not only give equal scope to all his actors, but to ensure no one eats into the others’ moments.

Jugjugg Jeeyo Review: Neetu Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani's Film Is Entertaining But Not Insightful

The pace of the movie does not give enough time for the audience to grasp its underlying message. Raj Mehta’s take on the challenge of keeping love alive in a marriage reminds you of the early 2000s big ensemble family dramas. It is a tale of three marriages – one has lasted 35 years, another is five years old, and a third is days away from being solemnized. Complications arising out of mistakes, misgivings, and mishaps haunt all three.

The movie is quite ironic with garish sets, loud music, high-pitched dialogues, and a bewildering screenplay in the service of a story about the pitfalls of marriages that drift. Nitu Kapoor quitting her marriage on the ‘shadi mandap’ is too much to take.

Confusion accommodates the expression of characters throughout the movie. The older couple of Anil Kapoor and Nitu Kapoor are at their best in acting. The younger stars, try well, but are unable to match that standard. Anil Kapoor’s dialogue, “Dabaa ke rakhna theek nahi – emotion na motion,” strikes a chord right into the heart.

Kiara and Varun’s chemistry is refreshing and, unlike most rom-coms, she isn’t reduced to a prop and has some strong scenes which showcase a new side to her. Maniesh Paul comes to the rescue by bringing in those lighter moments, while Neetu Kapoor is a delight to watch on the big screen. Her scene with Kiara on a bench overlooking the lake stands out as one of the best moments in the film.

Jug Jugg Jeeyo is all about saving a marriage and realizing that making a compromise and keeping your self-respect are two different conversations. Director Raj Mehta manages to use humour, sarcasm, and wit to keep the proceedings light and engaging. director Raj Mehta manages to use humor, sarcasm, and wit to keep the proceedings light and engaging.

Though the dialogues are good, with equally good songs, the movie tries to capture a lot without clearly explaining love, the institution of marriage, or the causes of divorce. The movie is not extraordinary, but definitely a one-time watch.
