In a significant turn of events, former Hiriyur Constituency MLA K. Purnima, along with her husband, BJP leader Srinivas, has joined the Congress party. This move has rattled the BJP and JDS, who were preparing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The ‘Kai’ faction has managed to sway influential leaders from the Yadav community, altering the political landscape.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, joining Purnima and other leaders at the KPCC office, emphasized that their return to the Congress signifies their dedication to social justice, claiming that they were previously associated with the BJP half-heartedly. More than 750 BJP leaders, including Purnima Krishnappa, daughter of late A. Krishnappa, a prominent Congress figure from the marginalized Golla community, have switched to the Congress. KPCC President Sivakumar, acknowledging this development, expressed his elation, stating that the party embraces individuals from all backgrounds, emphasizing their commitment to constitutional values and social justice.
Sivakumar further added, “Purnima, Srinivas, and their supporters are disillusioned with the BJP’s stance on social justice. They find it increasingly challenging to advocate for social justice within the BJP. Consequently, a growing number of backward communities are finding solace in the Congress.” Moreover, in a bid to strengthen the party’s base, several organizations, including the Karnataka State Category 1 Caste Federation and the Karnataka State Golla Yadav Sangh, are aligning with the Congress. Sivakumar welcomed this influx of new members, urging unity among party workers for the greater ideological cause.
The recent defection to the Congress represents a significant setback for the BJP and JDS alliance, prompting leaders to reevaluate their strategies for the approaching elections. Despite political differences, Sivakumar emphasized the need for collaborative efforts within the party, emphasizing the importance of unity for the greater good. In a landscape increasingly shaped by shifting loyalties, the repercussions of this move are likely to reverberate across Karnataka’s political sphere. As the parties gear up for the forthcoming electoral battle, the dynamics of the state’s political scenario continue to evolve, leaving room for unexpected twists and turns.
