The Former Indian pacer passed away after falling from balcony in Bengaluru at the age of 52. The Karnataka-based cricketer represented India in 2 Test matches and picked 3 wickets. In domestic cricket, he picked 125 wickets for Karnataka in 39 First-Class appearances.
David Johnson made his Test debut for India against Australia in October 1996 and went on to play a total of two Test matches for the national team. Despite his brief international career, Johnson left a lasting impression by clocking a remarkable speed of 157.8 kmph during a Test match against Australia, marking the highlight of his career. This exceptional feat showcased his raw pace and potential as a fast bowler, making him a memorable figure in Indian cricket history.
The incident took place at SLV Paradise in Kanakashri Layout, within the jurisdiction of the Kottanur police station, on Thursday at 11:15 am. He allegedly jumped while his family members were at home. The Kottanur police arrived at the scene and sent the body to the hospital for a post-mortem. It is suspected to be a suicide, possibly due to depression. The Kottanur police are currently gathering information.
Johnson, who was running a cricket academy and had not been in good health recently, is survived by his wife and two children.
“We were informed that he had fallen from the fourth floor of his apartment building. He was taken to a hospital, but the doctors declared him brought dead,” the KSCA official told Press Trust of India.
Former India player, Anil Kumble, who also represented Karnataka took to ‘X’ to offer his condolences on Johnson’s demise. Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI secretary Jay Shah also took to ‘X’ to pay tribute to the former India player.
