Yes, we are talking about Daniel Craig’s starrer Glass Onion: A Knives Out mystery here. The second installation, which was released on 23rd December on Netflix got an instant reaction over the internet. Apart from Daniel Craig, none were re-casted for the sequel as the director states this film is no continuation but a whole new story with the revival of detective Blanc. But the cast is no less, with the likes of stars like Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Jessica Henwick and more taking part.
The cast was starry and Daniel Craig enhanced it further but yet couldn’t save the movie from being less smart, and all-around less interesting. But we are not here to talk about the film. The highlight of the movie is what the core of the movie is, “Billionaires”. This murder mystery points out how dumb, overly ambitious, and how dark the side of Billionaires is and it justifies it throughout till the conclusion of the film.
Elon Musk is making it to the headlines every other day due to his Twitter rollout lately. But this movie was shot back in 2019, making one wonder if this movie predicted the future just like how the show Simpsons did. You can pick each character from the film and resemble it to a personality in real life.
What’s even more surprising is, the film seemed like a Biopic of Elon Musk! Surprised, and so are we… The central antagonist played by Edward Norton, the character named “Miles Bron” resembles Musk to the finest. A tech billionaire who doesn’t have a mobile phone, faxes his employees in the middle of the night, and makes unreasonable demands from others. Some of the ideas he is renowned for are – ‘Uber for biospheres’, ‘Crypto for kids’, ‘AI for dogs’ and using a speculated sustainable hydrogen-based fuel despite safety concerns.
A fascinating conversation between Edward Norton and Daniel Craig in the film struck me when Daniel Craig asks Bron what are disruptors (The group of Bron and the other known personalities are known as disruptors for disrupting the normal and creating their name). To which Bron replies, “Ask yourself, Am I the kind of person who will keep going? Will you break more things? Break bigger things? Are you willing to break the thing that nobody wants you to break? Because at that point, people are not gonna be on your side They’re gonna call you crazy They’re gonna say you’re a bully. They’re gonna tell you to stop. Even your partner will ask you to stop. Because as it turns out, Nobody wants you to break the system itself. But that is what true disruption is. To which the protagonist who was wronged by these billionaires replies, “Disruptors? The real thing this group has in common? Miles Bron’s money!!” She heads on to convey each of those who have this greed in common will stab people in the back to hold on to their money.
“Miles Bron has never had an original idea at any phase of his life — that’s a good summation of him,” stated Edward Norton about his character in the film. Detective Blanc in the film states that Miles Bron is not a genius but an idiot! And that sums up what these billionaires are. These Billionaires are not messiahs or extraordinary, they are just individuals who push forward a narrative that suits them the most and would do anything to make money in the name of innovation.
