While potholes in India are not a rare phenomenon, however, national highways having potholes is. Photos have surfaced of giant carters that are covering the full width of a national highway for as long as the eye can see.
An aerial video shot by Praveen Thakur of Dainik Bhaskar newspaper shows disturbing images of National Highway-227, which runs through Madhubani. The road has been dubbed an obstacle straight out of Takeshi’s Castle by netizens.
Ironically, two weeks ago, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the road infrastructure in Bihar would be on par with that of the US by December 2024. Additionally, he stated that the road infrastructure in the state has improved tremendously since 2015.
Moreover, the road’s condition evoked a sharp reaction from the ace political strategist Prashant Kishor. Mr Kishor is a frequent critic of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
In his tweet, which he wrote in Hindi, “Reminiscent of the condition of roads in Bihar in the Jungle Raj of the 90s, this is National Highway 227 (L) of Madhubani district of Bihar. Recently, Nitish Kumar Ji was speaking to the people of the road construction department at an event that they should tell everyone about the good condition of roads in Bihar.”
According to the Dainik Bhaskar report, the road has been in disrepair since 2015. Furthermore, although three tenders were issued, contractors went missing, leaving the work unfinished.
Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav strongly criticised the government in a tweet after he came to know about the road’s problem.

Soon, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry tweeted that the repair work on the highway would begin in two weeks. However, they said that the road work is yet to be handed over by the Nitish Kumar government.
This is with reference to “Dainik Bhaskar” report regarding NH 227 (Bihar). The work on NH mentioned in the article will be done by NHAI. However, the road is yet to be handed over by the State Govt. The work on the said project will begin in two weeks. https://t.co/Wr5APximXk
