2023 is expected to be very promising with a wide array of movies from across the country catering to different audiences. 2022 turned out to be very exciting for Indian cinema especially the South Indian film industry with blockbuster movies like Kantara, KGF 2 and others.
The Hindi film industry started the year with the release of ‘Kuttey’ backed by Vishal Bharadwaj and directed by his son Aasman Bharadwaj. Kuttey stars Arjun Kapoor, Tabu, Radhika Madan, Konkona Sen Sharma and Naseeruddin Shah, as they all chase a van carrying crores of rupees in cash. It had a somewhat slow start at the box office. Despite the controversies around it, the audience seems to be excited about the release of ‘Pathaan’ and it has received advance bookings of around 2 crore.
This year, the Tamil film industry saw their two top stars Vijay and Ajith Kumar, battle it out at the box office with their Pongal releases. Thalapathy’s Varisu has made around Rs 230 crore at the worldwide box office while Ajith’s Thunivu has made around Rs 170 crore so far. Both Varisu and Thunivu have received mixed responses from the critics.
Similar to the Tamil film industry even the Telugu film industry witnessed a clash at the start of the year. Chiranjeevi and Ravi Teja’s latest Telugu film is having a dream run at the box office. The massy action-drama is written and directed by Bobby Kolli, with Shruti Haasan and Catherine Tresa as the leading ladies. Waltair Veerayya was released alongside Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy. Despite the clash at the box office, both films have managed to perform equally well at the box office. Veera Simha Reddy is expected to cross the Rs 100 crore mark this week as it has been maintaining steady growth.
The Marathi film industry had an overwhelming start with the release of Ved. Marathi film Ved has entered the 50 Crore Club. The film has been scoring rather consistently at the box office and has now reached 50.50 crores. It stars Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’souza Deshmukh in lead roles. The film’s super success has resulted in renewed vigor for Riteish Deshmukh as he now has twin options of being an actor as well as a director.
