A 30-year-old woman and her toddler son were killed in Bengaluru after an under-construction pillar of the “Namma Metro” collapsed. Namma Metro pillar on the Outer Ring Road near Nagavara fell on their two-wheeler in Karnataka’s Bengaluru. Reports claimed that the woman, her husband and their son, were traveling on a bike when the under-construction metro pillar came crashing down. The deceased have been identified as Tejaswini and two-and-a-half-year-old son Vihaan.
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) Managing Director Anjum Pervez announced compensation of Rs 20 lakhs for the family of the deceased. “BMRCL will cover the entire cost of treatment of the injured persons. The construction work at the site will stop for 2 days. What has fallen down is a reinforcement structure, not a pillar. It was not a concrete structure. It has four ropes, and one of them seems to have broken. We’re asking the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) to provide a report on this incident.” Additional Commissioner Chandrashekhar said that it has been found that there was a disturbance in the iron pole and prima facie negligence has also been found at the workplace. He said that the expert team will carry out inspection and verification.
According to the police, Lohit Kumar, a civil engineer, was going to drop his Tejaswini at her workplace in Manyata Tech Park and his two sons at a child care center. Lohit Kumar and another son narrowly escaped in this accident. Addressing reporters in Dharwad, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai assured an inquiry into the incident and compensation to the bereaved. “I just got to know about it, we will get it investigated.. we will ascertain the reason for the collapse of the pillar and provide compensation,” he said.
Bheemashankar S Guled, DCP East Bengaluru said, “This morning around 10:45 am, the couple along with their twin children were traveling towards Hebbal when the metro pillar collapsed on the bike. The mother, Tejaswini and son Vihaan were seriously injured and shifted to Altis Hospital where both of them succumbed to their injuries.”
“Both suffered head injuries, we tried our best to save them. There was a lot of blood loss already and also fall in BP,” Doctors who treated them were quoted saying.
