1. Saudi Arabia beats Argentina
Saudi Arabia, ranked 51st in FIFA’s men’s rankings, defeated Argentina, world’s no.3 team and one of the favorites at the tournament, 2-1. For millions of Saudi fans, Messi became a subject of memes. Many Saudi fans were seen sporting banners and chanting at cameras during their victory celebrations on the streets.

3. First Female Referee At A Men’s World Cup
Frenchwoman Stephanie Frappart made history in this tournament as the first woman to referee a men’s World Cup match. Alongside assistants Neuza Back from Brazil and Karen Diaz from Mexico, the Frenchwoman formed part of an all-female refereeing trio officiating Costa Rica vs. Germany in their Group E match.
4. Morocco in the Semi- Finals
Morocco became the first African nation ever to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup. It was a phenomenal tournament for them as they have shown the entire world their capability and stature.
5. Germany loses to Japan
The 2014 world champion Germany suffered a shock defeat to Japan on the opening day ultimately setting the tone for a lackluster World Cup for the Germans. Germany dominated for large periods of the match against Japan and had plenty of opportunities to extend its lead after going up 1-0. But Japan went on to chase Germany and won the game.
