Upendra was introduced to the audience as an able director. However, it did not take long for him to mould into different roles as and when the requirements arose. He is known today not just for his direction skills but also as an actor, writer, singer, and also politician. Besides movies, Upendra has worked in several plays and he penned his first song for the movie ‘Anantana Avantara’, named ‘Come on Come on Kamanna’.

After cementing his position as an actor and a director, Upendra entered the world of politics. In 2019, he started his political party and also contested in the Lok Sabha elections. He started a party known as Uttama Prajaakeeya Party.
International acclaim
Upendra enjoys a strong international following. The Kannada diaspora spread across the world constitutes a strong fan base for the actor. The movie which opened the doors for him internationally was named ‘Upendra’. When a Japanese national watched the movie in Bengaluru, he suggested the release of it in Japan. The movie was eventually released at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival in Japan in 2001.

Kannada film OM is considered to be a cult film from the Kannada film industry. The movie is known for being one of the few films in India which saw multiple re-releases after the original release in India. Super – A movie without a title
Upendra marked his return as a director after several years in 2010. The movie followed the life of an NRI who returned to India and wanted to change society for good. At the time of its release, the movie did not have any title. The movie was just released with a symbol, without any title.
This unique way of marketing attracted the audiences and after the release of the movie the viewers classified the title of the movie and its image as ‘Super’.
