Post-pandemic has been a very contrasting period for movies across the globe. With COVID-19 bound restrictions in place and adhering the strict measures, cinema witnessed slow growth and an average reception from viewers. With 2023 approaching, it would be safe to assume that cinemas and cinematographers are expecting 2023 to be the year cinema rises to reclaim its glory which it once held.
2023 is said to be the year of cinema but that doesn’t take away the growing demand for OTT content. The battle between Cinema and OTT is one for the masses to only rejoice upon and not worry for. What the viewers receive in return is entertainment.
Let’s look at movies we need to look out for in 2023…
1. Pathaan – Releasing on 25th January (Cinema)

Pathaan marks the return of Shah Rukh Khan in lead after 4 long years which makes this one of the most anticipated movies in 2023. The film has the star cast of Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Dimple Kapadia etc. The movie is directed by Siddharth Anand under the YashRajFilms banner.
2. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – Releasing on 17th February (Cinema)

Marvel’s Phase 4 has ended with Wakanda Forever and now the Marvel studios are looking forward to shining in 2023 by kickstarting Phase 5 with one of the most anticipated and celebrated characters from the Avengers, “Ant-Man”. The movies will see retaining the previous cast with Jonathan Majors joining as Kang The Conqueror.
3. Shazam! Fury of the Gods – Releasing on 17th March (Cinema)

With all the revamping and recasting aside, the DC Universe is set to release the second installation of the character “Shazam”. With Billy Watson and his family going through the development phase of the powers they hold over, the film is set to be in the category of mass entertainer superhero films and we are hoping it sheds light upon the future of DC movies.
4. John Wick: Chapter 4 – Releasing on 24th March (Cinema)

Who doesn’t love Keanu Reeves? And in 2023 he’s back with the 4th installation of the John Wick franchise. The story sets in with John Wick uncovering a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, John Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe.
5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – Releasing 5th May (Cinema)

Another one from the Marvel Studios. The third installation of Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be one of Phase 5’s highlights as it introduces to us some new additions to the star cast. It is said to be the last and concluding part of the Guardians of the Galaxy which does keep one to assume it to be an emotional one.
6. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One – Releasing on 14th June (Cinema)

Tom Cruise is back!! And so is the star cast of the Mission Impossible franchise. The movie is one of the highest anticipated movies of the year 2023 as it sets the storyline of not one but two plots as the film is said to be the last of Tom Cruise’s appearances in the franchise. Recently Tom uploaded a video of a stunt scene and the fans were throttled!!
7. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts – Releasing in June (Cinema)

The Transformers franchise is back with a revamp. Under the director, “Steven Caple Jr.” the film is set to be updated cosmetically and has a more enhanced storyline. The last few installations have failed to retain the audience and with the revamp, the studio and the franchise are looking to regain the love of the viewers towards the franchise.
8. Oppenheimer – Releasing on 21st July (Cinema)

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is one of the most awaited films since its announcement. This is Nolan’s first film out of the WB banner and based on the story of the Manhattan Project upon the renowned physicist and father of the atomic bomb “J. Robert Oppenheimer”. With some big names enhancing the star cast, such as Cillian Murphy Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, etc., what more could one wish for?
9. Tiger 3 – Expected Release November 10th (Cinema)

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starring Tiger is one of the most thrilling films in Hindi cinema. Under the YashRajFilms banner, the film is set to return with its third installation which has got the fans to up their excitement. The film is set to release at the end of 2023. The film is not directed by Kabir Khan but by Maneesha Sharma and the film is set to be shot in Russia.
10. Pushpa II – Expected Release 26th December (Cinema & OTT)

Allu Arjun’s Pushpa was one of 2022’s finest masala entertainers. The second part of the movie is set to release in 2nd half of 2023 and his fans all across are waiting for the film to be released. The film was initially set to release on OTT but there are rumours for the movie to release in theatres first due to its reception amongst the mass.
The year 2023 is not just about movies but sequels of the already established franchises. With many more movies lined up such as Creed III, Indiana Jones, etc., from the west and Indian Cinema has Dostana 2, Gadar 2, Shehzaada, Jawaan, Dhunki, etc., this is looking promising year for cinema lovers.
