Mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, who was found guilty in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case, was sentenced to a life imprisonment by the Prayagraj MP-MLA court.
The former MP had made a plea in the Supreme Court for protection, while he was in the custody of UP Police. The plea was rejected by the Apex Court. While the former politician and his associate were in the prison, they were accused of being in conspiracy to kill Umesh Pal.
The case dates back to 2005 when a BSP MLA Raju Pal was murdered in January. Umesh Pal, who was a member of the Zila Panchayat then, had told the police that he was a witness to the murder. He alleged that when he refused to back off from his case, he was pressured by Ahmed and was kidnapped at gunpoint on February 28, 2006.

It has been 18 years since my son was kidnapped. He was a fighter. I have faith in the court. He (Atiq Ahmed) was sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping my son but he should be given a death sentence for the murder of my son. I have faith in UP CM Yogi Adityanath: Shanti… pic.twitter.com/JzVmChMjnZ
