On the 11th of March in the Haveri District of Karnataka, several farmers allegedly burnt down 3 vehicles and vandalized the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) office in Byadgi over the fall in chilly prices.

The Farmers’ anger turned into a violent protest when the price of chilies fell in the matter of a day from 20,000 rupees per quintal to 8,000 rupees per quintal. This fall in price angered the farmers and they allegedly burned down 3 vehicles and also the furniture of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) office in Byadgi.
The farmers are said to be from Andhra Pradesh and had come to Haveri to sell their produce of chilies but the sudden fall in the price made them angry and they resorted to stone pelting and burning vehicles and furniture.
The Police and the Fire Brigade arrived at the scene and took control of the situation blocking the entry of the market to keep the protesters away from the market. The situation is said to be under control now and the Police were able to disperse the crowd.
Talking about the incident Home Minster of Karnataka G Parameshwara said that the reason for the protest was the sudden fall in prices of the chilly. He further said that this fall in price is being checked concerning other APMC markets or if Haveri was the only case. The Chief Minister has asked for a detailed report of the fall in Prices and further action will be taken after the report has been submitted.
