A fake poster for an Iranian film “Muhammad” depicting a small child being preyed on by a man, is currently going viral on social media.
Twitter users started circulating this image in Nupur Sharma’s defence after she was accused of making offensive statements against the Prophet of Islam, which led to an international and political crisis for India.
The picture was first uploaded with the message, “When the trailer looks like this, imagine how the movie will be,” in Hindi by Twitter user Narpats62770513.
This triggered a wave of derogatory comments as well as opposing opinions.
The actual poster is of an Iranian film which was released in 2015, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Majid Majidi.
Sunni Muslim groups, which consider any representation of the Prophet to be blasphemous, have harshly criticised the movie.
Additionally, fatwas were issued for producing the movie against Majidi and music composer AR Rahman. The Maharashtra Home Minister at the time, Anil Deshmukh, wrote to the federal government in 2020 to request a ban on the film’s broadcast.
