On the occasion of the 81st Anniversary of the momentous QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT led by Mahatma Gandhi, a stark and concerning development has unfolded under the leadership of the BJP-led administration in Maharashtra.
This year’s observance of the historic day, cherished by our esteemed Freedom Fighters since its inception in 1943, has been marred by a heavy-handed response. Among those who actively participated in the 1942 Quit India Movement as a young student, Dr. G. G. Parikh, now an inspiring 99-year-old figure, finds himself deeply dismayed by the unexpected and perplexing sequence of recent events.
In an unprecedented move, the BJP-led government has embarked on an attempt to mark a significant historical milestone – the anniversary of the QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT. This notable day, once met with opposition by the ideological forebears of the present ruling party, witnessed collaboration between the RSS, Hindu Mahasabha, and the British Empire. Strikingly, the official advertisement released by the BJP-led government glaringly omits any reference to the QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT. This omission underscores the ongoing efforts of the BJP-RSS alliance to appropriate and distort the essence of our hard-fought freedom struggle for their agenda.
Presently, the D. B. Marg Police Station is holding approximately 50 activists under detainment. Their release is contingent upon the conclusion of the official commemorative program. This coercive measure highlights a troubling infringement on civil liberties, raising concerns about the government’s commitment to democratic principles and the right to dissent.
Adding to the growing concern, during the early hours of the day, law enforcement officials visited the residences of Tushar Gandhi and Teesta Setalvad. In no uncertain terms, they were informed that their participation in the activities in August Kranti Maidan would be disallowed. In a disheartening sequence, Tushar Gandhi was subsequently taken into custody at Santacruz Police Station, while Teesta Setalvad was instructed to remain indoors, frustrating their engagement with the annual commemoration.
Traditionally, as an embodiment of the People’s Movement, honoring the legacy of the “Quit India Movement” by embarking on a symbolic march from the Tilak Statue located at Girgaum Chowpatty to the historic August Kranti Maidan. Regrettably, this year, the pursuit has been obstructed by the actions of a divisive and authoritarian regime. The actions of this administration echo a communal and authoritarian trend, preventing the heartfelt tribute to a pivotal moment in the nation’s struggle for independence.
The extraordinary crackdown on this significant day in the nation’s independence movement has served to fortify the determination in the face of this assault on our democratic and constitutional privileges. In response, they steadfastly pledge to uphold the ideals and principles inherent in the freedom struggle, unwaveringly safeguarding the nation and its citizens.
