Removing of history chapters from textbooks has been a norm in India, especially Karnataka, in recent times. According to reports, the Congress government in the state is working towards the removal of chapters on Hedgewar in class 10 Kannada textbooks, which were introduced in the syllabus by the BJP government.
The decision regarding the same, was reportedly taken at a meeting on education reforms in Bengaluru. The meeting was attended by the Chief Minister of the state and the School Education Minister Bangarappa.
The Bharatiya Janata Party was quick to react to the reports. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the alleged decision of removing the chapter on RSS heads in Karnataka would be a “crime against the youth”.
Congress MLC BK Hari Prasad stated that the government is not planning to continue with the same syllabus. He also slammed Hedgewar by calling him a ‘fake freedom fighter’ and a ‘coward’.
Karnataka Congress Primary and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said that the government will revise the school syllabus this year. He also said that the old books will not be recalled, instead, supplementary textbooks will be sent to schools with instructions on what to teach and what not.
Defending the government’s decision in regard to revision is solely being done in the interests of the children’s future. He also stated that a purely technical team will be handling the revisions.
