Bengaluru: The capital city of Karnataka is not only contributing towards a steep rise in the number of covid cases but also attributing to a high number of road accidents in the State. As per the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) 2020 report, the city finds a place among 89 major cities in the world
According to the data, most of the accidents take place on Sundays. The figure is put at 109 on Sundays, while Saturday showed a comparatively lower number of accidents with just 71 cases.
Getting to the crux of the matter, what comes to light are many contributing factors such as bad quality of the roads, poor traffic maintenance by city police, tailgating, drink and drive incidents, etc. which end up in the soaring number of accidents.
The city has always been in news for its ever-growing traffic, and the relative increase in the number of accidents which, has been alarming. Most of the cases reported are from the traffic police limits of Yelahanka, Chikkajala, Electronic city, Airport Road, Old Madras Road, Hosur stretch, and NICE road. Out of them, accident cases on the NICE road have largely been attributed to overspeeding.
In 2020 alone, the city reported 657 road accident cases. , out of which, 109 cases were reported during weekends. This is a matter of serious concern as far as pedestrians are concerned as 164 death cases of pedestrians have been reported in the year. This is more depressing a fact as many innocent lives are lost due to the unruly behavior of others. At least 82 people have lost their lives, falling victim to reckless driving.
The pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns imposed indeed has been a blessing considering the numerous lives lost on Bangalore roads as reports show that there has been a decline in road accident deaths in the past two years. The prime concern stands as, Are citizens of Bengaluru ready to welcome the smart city project while basic problems remain untouched?
