To combat the roadside dumping, and landfills and improve waste management in Bengaluru City the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Solid Waste Management Department has come up with an initiative to construct Kasa Kiosks, in 76 locations all over Bangalore where roadside dumps are common.
Kasa kiosk is Bengaluru’s first manned kiosk, with designated bins established for waste collection. The first kiosk was set up near the Air Force Campus on NAL Wind Tunnel Road Murugeshpalya by Omega Healthcare Management Services Pvt. Ltd., in association with BBMP and Sahaas. It was successful in improving the condition of the road.
According to an official in the SWM wing, about 30% of the waste generated in the city isn’t being picked up by the door-to-door collection vehicles, instead, it ends up on the roadside and in landfills. This occurs as a large section of the people in the city who work late into the night miss the collection vehicles during garbage collection and end up dumping it on the roadside.
Once the kiosks start working, all these people can fall back on them to dump waste into segregated bins. The kiosk then segregates the waste and hands over the dry waste to the Dry Waste Collection Center and wet and Domestic Hazardous waste to the BBMP. The project cost is estimated to be around Rs 400 lakh and the amount will be drawn out of Shubra Bengaluru Grant.
These are chiefly beneficial to the areas where garbage collection doesn’t happen regularly and to those who miss the garbage collection. The kiosks will be manned by personnel who will oversee the proper segregation of waste and dumping in the units. As of now, the kiosks will be operational until 8 p.m.
