People can now feed any one of the 33,000 cattle heads that are housed in more than 200 goshalas throughout the state for as little as Rs 70 per day.
To encourage donors to select the cows they want to feed or adopt, the Department of Animal Husbandry is launching the Punyakoti adoption website on Thursday.
This is the first programme of its kind in the nation to permit the adoption of many cows with personalised choices.
The state has 1.14 crore cattle, including cows and buffaloes, according to department authorities.
The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill was passed by the state government last year in an effort to stop their killing.Since then, the number of old cows at goshalas run by the government and private organisations has increased.
The government and KEONICS worked together to establish the website, which will include information on more than 20,000 of the 33,000 cows.
“Though the government funds these goshals, it is difficult to maintain the animals as the numbers are huge. This is the reason we are opting for private participation,’’ said official sources.
Donors have the choice to support goshalas, adopt a cow, or feed a cow. One may donate starting at Rs. 10 under the “Donation for Goshalas” category, “Adopt a Cow” category, “Feed a Cow” category, and “Adopt a Cow” category.
