On the 77th anniversary of India’s Independence Day, actor Akshay Kumar, who frequently drew flak for holding Canadian citizenship, was given Indian citizenship. “Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!,” Akshay Kumar said on X, formerly known as Twitter, sharing the registration document.

Being a citizen of Canada has always drawn criticism for Akshay Kumar. The actor stated that India means everything to him in an interview with AajTak earlier this year and that he has already registered for a change of passport.
He experienced a dry spell in his career in the 1990s, delivering more than 15 straight flops, which encouraged him to apply for Canadian citizenship. After he chose not to cast a ballot in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, his citizenship status came under intensive scrutiny. He held a “non-political” interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi prior to the elections, which also sparked discussion on the issue.
Meanwhile, on the work front, the actor has finally seen a hit film after numerous flops shows. His recent release OMG 2, is shining at the box office. The film has garnered a total ₹55.17 crore in India. The collections for Monday were ₹12.06 crore, which was higher than the release date, which was ₹10.26 crore. As per Sacnilk’s report, the film is estimated to earn ₹20.00 crore net in India on its fifth day.
According to several accounts, the censor board halted the movie because they wanted to be extra cautious, given the religious nature of the movie. However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) later approved the movie and awarded it an “A” (Adults Only) certificate.
