American businessman Neville Roy Singham is accused of paying the NewsClick Organisation to spread Chinese propaganda. Neville Roy Singham is the CEO of ThoughtWorks has his financial business based from Chicago to Shanghai. He resides in Shangai and has used charities from non-profit organizations in America to fund Chinese ideas in Southeast Asian countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Xinjiang, and India.
The Delhi police special cell has raided the offices of the news click online portal, and the homes of several journalists working for the company, stating reasons that the company received illegal funding and allegedly propagating Chinese propaganda. The founder and Editor-in-Chief of the news portal NewsClick, Prabir Purkayastha, and its Human Resources head, Amit Chakraborty, were arrested by the police on the evening of October 3rd, 2023.
Neville is a Sri Lankan-born, American citizen, and founded Thought Works in 1993 and sold it in 2017. He is known for his political views on issues like open-source software, anti-war activism, and environmentalism. He seemingly has strong ties with the Chinese government, and the Communist Party of China, he was sighted attending various events organized by Chinese media outlets such as China Global Television Network (CGTN) and China Radio International (CRI).
The news organization has rejected the allegations made by the Enforcement Directorate investigation has alleged that the news portal has been receiving illegal funds from US businessman Neville Roy Singham to spread Chinese propaganda and declined any sort of association with Neville Roy. They issued a statement saying, “NewsClick does not take directions from Neville Roy Singham regarding the content published on its website.”
Several Opposition leaders and press bodies have condemned the police actions. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said, “I feel that dictatorship has come… This is a message from the BJP to all the journalists. We are in support of free journalism. We strongly condemn these raids”.
