“Today in India, I believe, the rape rates are highest. What’s the reason? Because women are not under gosh-e-parda (Hijab). It is not since today and it’s not even compulsory. One who wants to wear it, to protect her beauty, they wear it. And it is not since today. It’s since many many years,”
The highly controversial statement that hit the headlines last week was given by four times MLA, and Senior Congress Leader from Karnataka, B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan. He never shies away from expressing his unfiltered opinions, which has put him in hot waters lately, here are five times B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan made it to the headlines.
Recently he took a dig at recent remarks of Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, he said that the rape rates in India are ‘highest’ in the world as women are not wearing Islamic attire Hijab which stirred quite a bit of controversy calling it the mentality of victim-blaming which is against empowerment.
He attempted to clarify the motivation behind his speech and apologized for hurt sentiments and feelings in a series of tweets through his Twitter handle @BZZameerAhmedK.
I get anxious & scared to see increasing atrocities & rape on Women in our Country. Because of this state of our society, I said that at least with burqa-hijab we may be able to prevent rapes. It was not intended to hurt or disrespect anyone.
I regret it if it has hurt anyone.

I beleive our ancestors had mandated wearing burqa-hijab as religious practice in order to protect women. My statement was based on this belief & there was no other reason.

My opinion is that education is the only thing that protects women. If, for religious reasons, not wearing Hijab prevents them to access education, I would want them to first get educated at least by wearing it. They will then be able protect themselves through education.

There is no strong weapon than education. Hence I humbly request both the government & the people to not deny them the education just because they want to wear Hijab.

Around August of last year, The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided Mr. Zameer Ahmed Khan’s properties and issued a notice to submit records pertaining to his home and properties. Major Congress party leaders issued statements in his support claiming, the ED raid was politically motivated to suppress the voices of the opposition party leaders as well as to defame them. Mr. Khan didn’t deny the possibilities of the political influence of the raid.

The congress MLA landed in controversy last April by calling H D Kumaraswamy as “Kaala Kumaraswamy”. Which was opposed by JDS workers for its racist nature, members of Bengaluru Yuva JDS filed a complaint against him in Bengaluru and staged a protest outside his house, he defended his statement saying, “Yesterday JDS workers protested in front of my house. They filed a complaint also. If Kumaraswamy was fair, and I had called him black/dark then it’s my mistake. He’s dark. People call me short, God made us like this. God made him dark, so he’s dark. Dark will be called dark only.”
