In Bengaluru, the State government aims to make the Internet available to more people and improve services. They want to put public Wi-Fi in 5,000 places across the city. This would make Bengaluru the city in India with the most public Wi-Fi spots.
During a meeting on Sunday, Priyank Kharge, the Minister for IT and Biotechnology, and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, responsible for the Bengaluru Development portfolio, deliberated over the practical aspects of introducing this initiative. The plan entails not only offering complimentary public Wi-Fi in Bengaluru but also expanding this service to other regions within the State.
They have pinpointed 3,000 locations in the city suitable for hotspots, and the aim is to exceed this number, reaching over 5,000 hotspots. According to Mr. Kharge, discussions with telecom companies and wireless broadband service providers are still pending. He mentioned that during his earlier term, talks were initiated, and support offers were made by the telecom providers, but the previous government failed to pursue those opportunities.
Mr. Kharge further explained, “There were challenges with the BBMP’s lack of cooperation regarding tower installation in specific locations. I had a meeting with Mr. Shivakumar to address concerns related to the public Wi-Fi initiative.” Once the implementation in Bengaluru is successful, the government plans to expand this public Wi-Fi project to other administrative bodies across the State.
