Full Story:
D Kempanna, President of the Karnataka Contractors’ Association, has raised concerns about the persistence of corrupt practices in government contracts. He alleges that despite a change in government from BJP to Congress, the demand for a ’40 per cent commission’ remains, with certain government officials allegedly pressuring contractors for kickbacks. Kempanna emphasizes that while MLAs and MPs no longer directly demand commissions, some officials continue to exploit contractors.
The ’40 per cent commission’ accusation by the Karnataka Contractors’ Association had previously triggered a political controversy during the tenure of the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government. The Congress, then in opposition, seized upon the allegations, making it a key election issue during the 2023 assembly polls. The association had even written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the purported kickback demands. The BJP dismissed the claims as a ‘political conspiracy’ aimed at tarnishing the government’s reputation.
Kempanna, while refraining from naming specific officials involved in the alleged corruption, urged the government to address the issue promptly. He emphasized the need for the government to keep a vigilant eye on corrupt officials within departments such as Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Public Works Department, and the Irrigation Department. Kempanna voiced concern that persistent corruption could tarnish the government’s image in the eyes of the public.
Kempanna urged authorities to take decisive action against corrupt officials. He stressed the importance of weeding out individuals engaging in corrupt practices within various departments.
The BJP, facing allegations during its term, dismissed the claims as a ‘political conspiracy’ to undermine its popularity. On the other hand, after assuming office, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar assured contractors of a crackdown on corruption. He also pledged to expedite the clearance of pending bills related to government contracts.
